Tottenham Hotspur are finding their improving reputation in world football comes at a cost as Europe’s elite clubs circle around their squad, looking to pick off their best players.

The latest to come under the lascivious gaze of others is Toby Alderweireld with Real Madrid among a host of clubs looking at the Belgium international, according to the Daily Mirror.

Competition for the experienced central defender comes from Tottenham’s Premier League rivals Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.

However, the defending Spanish champions believe that an offer from abroad will find more favour with the north London club’s hierarchy than one received from domestic clubs.

While Tottenham are negotiating with Alderweireld’s agent over a new deal, the Belgian is feeling aggrieved at his omission from recent matchday squads. Despite the claims made to the contrary by his manager, the centre back declared himself fit for the north London Derby with Arsenal and the trip to Juventus.

Spurs may be forced to sell Alderweireld this summer with a £25m escape clause becoming active when the 2018/19 season begins. With interest in the player growing and an impasse in talks, the club may take the view that this is the opportune moment to cash in on a highly regarded defender.
