Former Arsenal and Manchester City right-back Bacary Sagna is an unlikely signing by Serie A newboys Benevento, reports talkSPORT.
Then again everything about Benevento Calcio is a surprise these days.
The Campania-based team prop up Serie A but back-to-back wins over Chievo and Sampdoria gave them pride in their debut season in the top flight. This weekend, they face Napoli in a local derby knowing victory would ensure the current XI is never forgotten.
Their aim, however, is to avoid relegation and they need to transform their fortunes immediately if that is to happen. Signing a player with Bacary Sagna’s experience can only bring benefits to the club.
The 34-year-old had been expected to join Premier League side Leicester City but despite agreeing terms, Sagna says he had no further contact with the Foxes. It left him in limbo and with the January window open, he drew a line under that deal to move to Italy.
The deal keeps Sagna at the Giallorossi until the end of the season but an option exists for a further year if both sides are happy to extend the deal. Sadly for Benevento, the 65-times capped France international, lacks match fitness and won’t be available for coach Roberto De Zerbi until next week when they travel to Roma.
